How to Get Permanent Marker Off Couch

If you find permanent marker on your couch, don’t panic. There are several ways that you can clean the ink from the fabric without damaging it.

Rubbing Alcohol

  • Combine rubbing alcohol with dish soap and cold water in a bowl. 
  • Dampen a rag or cotton balls in the solution and apply it directly to the ink stains. 
  • Blot around the marker stains gently so that the solution soaks in.
  • You can then firmly dab the permanent marker stains making sure not to scrub it as that can make it worse. 
  • Once the stain is gone, use a damp cloth to wipe the surface and remove marker stains.
  • You can repeat this stain removal process if the process isn’t effective in removing permanent marker stains.

Magic Eraser

  • Soak the Magic Eraser in warm water and squeeze it to remove the excess. 
  • Apply it directly to the permanent marker stain and use a circular motion.
  • Once the stained area is clean, dry it with a paper towel or dry cloth. 

Toothpaste Baking Soda Mixture

  • Combine toothpaste and baking soda in a small bowl. 
  • Mix it until it forms a thick paste, and apply it to the stained surface. 
  • Rub it gently to remove stains.
  • Finally, use a damp rag to clean the delicate fabric and dry it with a paper towel.

Aerosol Hairspray 

Hairspray is great for removing stains from fabric furniture as well as leather surfaces.

  • Start by spraying the dry-erase stain and letting the solution soak in for a few minutes.
  • Then, use a damp rag with warm water to wipe away the permanent ink stain and any unpleasant odor leftover from the spray bottle.

Can you use white vinegar to remove Sharpie marks?

Yes, distilled white vinegar is an effective stain remover. 

Simply combine it in a bowl with dishwasher soap and cold water. Dip a sponge into the solution and squeeze out the excess liquid. Gently scrub the stain with the damp sponge.

If the stain is stubborn, put a little elbow grease into it until the black permanent marker is gone. You can then dry and clean the area with a clean cloth.
