Mixed Media Art Illustrations

Mixed media art has been a popular art form since the early 1900s and refers to artwork which combines a range of media in one single piece. Even just using different materials such as paint, watercolour and coloured pencils can qualify as mixed media artwork. By using a huge range of materials, mixed media artists are able to reap all of the benefits of each medium to create truly stunning, unique artwork. Many artists actually use this technique without even thinking about it – even just sketching out their object before painting it can be classed as mixed media art.

Mixed media art can be made up of a limitless combination of materials, with each combination creating a different effect. For example, applying watercolour over the top of ink will create a completely effect to ink applied over watercolour, so a huge number of effects can be created from just a few materials.

There are a huge number of popular forms of mixed media art, including:

  • Collages
  • Greeting cards
  • Three dimensional sculptures
  • Assemblage
  • Scrapbooks

People often get confused between mixed media art and multi-media, but there’s a distinct difference between the two. Both art forms utilise a range of materials, however, multi-media art is created using a combination of electronic media forms, including video, audio and film, whereas mixed media art uses a range of  mediums including ink, watercolour, oils and pencils.
