How to Remove Chalk Marker

Chalkboards can be fantastic when it comes to decoration or simply taking notes. If you’re into your arts and crafts, you will have likely noticed the increase in popularity of chalk markers.

There are some excellent chalkboard markers that look great and last for a long time. Although, this is both a blessing and a curse because it means that nowadays, chalk is harder to remove from an entire surface.

If you’re struggling with erasing chalk markers, liquid chalk markers or chalkboard paint from your surfaces, continue reading our helpful tips below! These cleaning methods are great for porcelain chalkboards and any other new chalkboard that you have.

Top Methods for Removing Chalk Marker

Chalk Cleaners

Using chalkboard cleaners makes it easy for you to erase chalk markers from surfaces. This is because chalkboard cleaners are specially designed to erase chalk markers easily from surfaces. They usually come in a spray bottle which makes them super easy to use.

All you need to do is spray the surface and wipe it clean with a soft cloth or paper towel. Using special chalk cleansers is more costly than some of our other options below, however, they’re highly effective and easy to use.

Magic Eraser

Magic erase is another common method people use to remove chalk marks. It involves using a damp cloth with water and wiping the surface. This can be a great way to get rid of chalk from chalkboards, doors, walls, and frames. You can find plenty of cheap magic erasers that allow you to clean chalk easily and keep your costs low.

Glass Cleaner

Windex window cleaner is a superb alternative to magic erases. This can be especially useful during times when you may have run out of magic erasers and need an effective cleaning product that you already have stocked in the cupboards. Simply spray the area that you want to clean with the Windex bottle and wipe it.

Some people find that there are still faint chalk marks. If this is the case, simply spray the surface with Windex and wipe it clean again with a wet cloth. It’s a great way to remove tough stains, but be sure to wear safety gloves!

Vinegar

The cleaning methods mentioned above are all effective ways to remove chalk marks. Having said that, you may still notice that there are faint marks on the surface. This can be frustrating when you want to reuse the same surface to write or draw something else.

Vinegar is a non-toxic ingredient that can be used to remove the leftover chalk residue so that you can start on a clean slate. Not to mention, using vinegar will disinfect the surface.

All you need to do is dampen a sponge or microfiber cloth with a small quantity of white vinegar and clean the surface. You can then get another sponge with a small amount of water to remove the vinegar residue along with any remains of chalk.

Just be sure to wear gloves if you have sensitive skin to prevent any irritation. These methods work great, regardless of the chalk marker brands that you’re using.

FAQs

What’s the difference between porous and non-porous surfaces?

Porous surfaces are the kinds that include small openings or tiny pores. Non-porous surfaces don’t include any small openings. Hard and smooth surfaces, such as MDF wood-coated surfaces, tend to be non-porous.

Can a chalk pen be used for a porous and a non-porous surface?

Check the vinyl chalkboard labels along with the labels on your chalk, whether it’s new or traditional chalk, to see whether it can be used for porous or non-porous chalkboards.

Can you prevent chalk marker stains?

Completely preventing liquid chalk marks can be tricky. However, there are several ways to reduce the chances of it happening again that include the following:

  • Prime your chalk board
  • Wait for the chalk marker ink to dry properly to prevent chalk dust
  • Ensure the chalk is intended for the surface you’re using it on so that there’s no residue left
  • Test the chalk on a small area of the surface first
  • Make sure to use a clean cloth every time (avoid baby wipes as they can leave residue)
